Lexical alignment in second language communication: evidence from a picture-naming task

نویسندگان

چکیده

Language alignment occurs when interlocutors mimic each other’s language. can happen as a result of priming, but may also be mediated by speakers’ beliefs about their interlocutor, including how language-proficient they believe the interlocutor to be. However, it is unknown whether bilingual speakers show such effects. In this study, participant and took turns labelling pictured objects. These had alternative labels—one preferred, one dispreferred – with latter used interlocutor. Participants were native Mandarin who rated themselves higher- or lower-intermediate L2 English learners. They told was either speaker, another English-learner. series three experiments, results showed that participants aligned using label. Rates varied, depending on perceived proficiency lesser extent, speaker’ self-rated proficiency.

Electrophysiological evidence that inhibition supports lexical selection in picture naming.

We investigated the neural basis of inhibitory control during lexical selection. Participants overtly named pictures while response times (RTs) and event-related brain potentials (ERPs) were recorded. The difficulty of lexical selection was manipulated by using object and action pictures with high name agreement (few response candidates) versus low name agreement (many response candidates). To ...

Lexical Access in Persian Normal Speakers: Picture Naming, Verbal Fluency and Spontaneous Speech

Objectives: Lexical access is the process by which the basic conceptual, syntactical and morpho-phonological information of words are activated. Most studies of lexical access have focused on picture naming. There is hardly any previous research on other parameters of lexical access such as verbal fluency and analysis of connected speech in Persian normal participants. This study investigates t...

First Language Activation during Second Language Lexical Processing in a Sentential Context

Lexicalization-patterns, the way words are mapped onto concepts, differ from one language      to another. This study investigated the influence of first language (L1) lexicalization patterns on the processing of second language (L2) words in sentential contexts by both less proficient and more proficient Persian learners of English. The focus was on cases where two different senses of a polys...

Locus of semantic interference in picture naming: Evidence from dual-task performance.

Disagreement exists regarding the functional locus of semantic interference of distractor words in picture naming. This effect is a cornerstone of modern psycholinguistic models of word production, which assume that it arises in lexical response-selection. However, recent evidence from studies of dual-task performance suggests a locus in perceptual or conceptual processing, prior to lexical res...

Age of acquisition effects in picture naming: evidence for a lexical-semantic competition hypothesis.

In many tasks the effects of frequency and age of acquisition (AoA) on reaction latencies are similar in size. However, in picture naming the AoA-effect is often significantly larger than expected on the basis of the frequency-effect. Previous explanations of this frequency-independent AoA-effect have attributed it to the organisation of the semantic system or to the way phonological word forms...
